Gentle Yoga : Tuesday 5pm - 6:30pm

Alison has been practicing yoga for nearly twenty years and teaching for five. After struggling with chronic lower back pain from a car accident as a child, she turned to yoga in her mid-twenties. For the first few years she practiced with yoga DVDs. Then through yoga, prohibitive back pain gave way to a transformed sense of limberness and strength in her body, along with renewed self-assurance, and she began to practice the Bikram method for several years.

Alison was hit by a car while riding her bicycle in 2009 and incurred a broken knee. Complications resulted in an arduous year-long recovery. The experience of going from being fit and active to incapacitated and depressed is where the real magic of yoga was ignited for Alison. She eventually returned to yoga through a hot Vinyasa Yoga practice and opened up to a more spiritual and philosophical world. With life’s challenges as a catalyst she embarked on a deeper journey through her yoga practice. Yoga has since remained a central tool for her to tune in to the present moment, resonate with her true Self and stay honest in her practice and her life.

In 2015 Alison received her 200-hour Vinyasa certification under Stephanie Battle with Sacred Brooklyn while in Costa Rica. Her heart centered approach to teaching emphasizes pranayama (regulation of breath), which helps us observe and connect to life force and presence. Using asanas as a practice of love and compassion, she meets her students where they are and guides them to feel into the asana practice from the inside out to find the right alignment for their bodies and reap the benefits that yoga has to offer mind, body and spirit.

Alison holds a Masters of Public Health and Nutrition and a B.A. in Anthropology and Spanish. Also, she is a certified Holistic Health Coach. She is a lover of the natural world and lived in Spain and New York City before moving to the Big Island. She describes her teaching style as gentle Vinyasa/Hatha. She has taught in studios, schools, housing facilities, parks and community centers and assisted at Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, N.Y. in 2017. Se habla español.
